Christine Chubbuck

Postby CrackneyLove » 25 Feb 2010 04:37

Has anyone else been trying to find the video of this event? People say the footage was destroyed but there were copies made and it was in public domain for a long time but then just disappeared! Some people have claimed to have seen in the early days of the internet and one person claimed they say it in the 80s on a tape called "Death - The Ultimate Trip" if anyone has any information about this, please post!

Christine Chubbuck was an American television news reporter who committed suicide during a live broadcast on July 15th, 1974. At 9:38 AM, 8 minutes into her talk show, Suncoast Digest, on WXLT-TV in Sarasota, Florida, she drew out a .38 caliber revolver and shot herself in the head. She died in hospital 14 hours later. According to her co-workers working the day of her suicide she took the unusual step of excusing herself to write her script for the newscast. She normally opened her show with an interview and conducted an informal half hour and she never once opened her show with a newscast. She also placed under her desk a bag of puppets that she had occasionally used during a broadcast. Hidden in the bag was the revolver. Before her newscast she told the producer that she wanted them to get ready a film of a shooting that happened the weekend before and then she took her seat. After 3 pieces of news, she led into the shooting piece but the without the film because it wouldn't run correctly. It was here that she delivered her last words and then shot herself. Her last words were------------"In keeping with Channel 40's policy of bringing you the latest in blood and guts in living color, we bring you another first, an attempted suicide." --------- The "script" she went to write was actually the story of her own suicide attempt, detailing how she'd be taken to the hospital and declared to be in critical condition. She was the first person to ever commit suicide on live television. Three weeks before her suicide she asked the stations news director if she could do a news piece on suicide. After getting her pitch approved she called the local police department to discuss with an officer methods of suicide. In the interview he told her that one of the most efficient ways was to use a .38 caliber revolver and with hollow point bullets, which would disintegrate on impact. A week before her suicide she told a co-worked that she bought a gun and joked about killing herself on air. Her mother, in an interview granted the day of the suicide, said Christine was very depressed and had little friends or romantic interests.

I hear there's a reel with the broadcast featuring her suicide but it was either given to her family or the fbi has it. I wonder if it will ever come out public by accident or something.

Cool story! Never heard of her or the incident. Here's hoping for a video to be found.

Well, from what I've read, the video does exist.

I've heard the following stories:

1. FBI Training Tape

2. The FCC has a copy

3. It was on the internet in the early days

4. It was on a "Faces Of Death" style tape.

I've also heard there is a documentary about her in the works, and they apparently have found the footage and it will be featured as a DVD extra and/or possibly in the movie. But I'm not 100 percent sure on that.

But trust me, the family doesn't own the only copy. If anyone remembers the "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" show that Christine's story was featured on, I talked to the producer of that segment and he told me that the family didn't own the only copy and the police took a COPY. Not the original. The police didn't have the equipment available to run the film (it was 2 inch film = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quadruplex_videotape ), and meanwhile the manager of WXLT showed people the footage and it was said that he was going to sell to a New York station but the Chubbuck family got an injunction to prevent that from happening.

So, in conclusion, I do think it's out there...it's just a matter of actually finding this said footage. We'll see if this documentary materializes.

Hadn't heard about it prior to this post, but having looked into it - it seems that it will be a very long time before somebody finds a copy. Some people say it was posted way back in the 90's. Others say it was on one of the Death Videos ("Banned In The US" keeps coming up as a possible source). Other people claim it is on an FBI training video.

Basically it seems like this is the Holy Grail of death videos. The sad fact of the matter is that she wanted people to see her death video. She was depressed. She killed herself on TV. She died a virgin at 30. And pretty much everything about her, besides a few pictures, has been written out of history.

There was another forum I found by googleing her name and after reading through all 27 pages they had contacted the FCC, filled Freedom of Information Acts, contacted the only living relative (her brother), paid for the police departments investigation files, contacted the lady from E! who was supposed to have a copy of the video, contacted people who worked at the station before and after this incident (including the weatherman for the station at the time).

Yep - they never got the tape. If so many people have seen this why do ZERO copies exist? The Death: Ultimate Trip video seems to have ZERO information about it out there on the web. The only mention of it was on the two AV & DVD Maniacs threads.

And I see these people talking about having seen the suicide video on the early days of the web and they are only in their early 20's themselves. Like anyone who is 21 years old actually trolled the gore alt.binaries back in the late 80's to 90's. What was the early days of the internet? 1996? 1990? Or early like 2005 early? Did you see it when you were 7 years old? Was it back in the days of AOL? What makes you 100% sure you have seen it?

People need to take a fucking look at the term "false memories" and consider it as a viable explanation for what they "remember".

More like when I was 16 or 17ish at least I think I saw it I deff saw a chick off herself on a news show. Could have been a reenactment or something though.

Hewett that wasn't directed at you, plus please don't mind my net pms. It was meant more for so many of the people out on the net who say they have seen this, yet it just hasn't been hosted online at any known website. So many of these posts just get saturated with people giving false information, which ALL lead to nothing. The video isn't available.

I like to keep an open mind about people and their memories.

I do remember reading an article about people "remembering" seeing some guy die on the Dick Cavett show despite the fact it never aired.

People "remember" lots of things.. there's so many people who remember things from WW2, for example, where their stories have since been proven to be false.

Yep, it's sad...but anyway...

I think some day it will leak...I do believe it's still "out there", I don't think it was just destroyed and nothing is left. Just my personal opinion.
